Fasting: Why We Should
Why should we fast you might be asking. God said, " when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you." ( Je. 29:13,14) When you are willing to set aside the appetites of the body to concentrate on the work of praying, it is demonstrating that you mean business, that you are seeking God with all your heart. Fasting is an expression of wholeheartedness. This is seen in Joel's call to the nation of Israel. " Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart WITH fasting." ( Joel 2:12) Denying yourself food to focus on God and His program shows humility. This is why fasting is also equivalent with the phase " to humble yourself before the Lord." ( Ps. 35:13, 1 Kgs. 21:29, Ezra 8:21) Fasting is also synonymous with "afflicting one soul." It is denying yourself, not only your body, but also your wants and desires. It is a way of saying that food and my desires are second to something else. Next Time: Guidelines to fasting
