Fasting: What it Is Not
Fasting is not a physical or psychological discipline. God never tells people to fast as a purely physical discipline. For example, fasting for the purpose of making your body beautiful. When the Bible uses the term "fasting" it has spiritual goals in mind. You must be careful in using Biblical fasting as a smoke screen for problems such as Anorexia or Bulimia. Fasting is not a tool to manipulate God. Sometime fasting is viewed as an attempt to twist God's arm or to win his approval. But God doesn't respond to pressure. ( Acts 23: 12,14, Je. 14:12) Never think of fasting as a hunger strike designed to force God's hand and get your own way. Fasting is not a hypocritical religious exercise. As a way of saying, "look at how spiritual I am." ( Lu. 18:12) But fasting is between you and your Father in heaven. He sees you in secret and will reward you openly.
