Fasting: What it Is Not

Fasting is not a physical or psychological discipline. God
never tells people to fast as a purely physical discipline.
For example, fasting for the purpose of making your body
beautiful. When the Bible uses the term "fasting" it has
spiritual goals in mind. You must be careful in using
Biblical fasting as a smoke screen for problems such as
Anorexia or Bulimia. Fasting is not a tool to manipulate
God. Sometime fasting is viewed as an attempt to twist
God's arm or to win his approval. But God doesn't respond
to pressure. ( Acts 23: 12,14, Je. 14:12) Never think of
fasting as a hunger strike designed to force God's hand and
get your own way. Fasting is not a hypocritical religious
exercise. As a way of saying, "look at how spiritual I am."
( Lu. 18:12) But fasting is between you and your Father in
heaven. He sees you in secret and will reward you openly. (
Math. 6:18)
